the toronto district school board had a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding violence on its campuses, and when it was passed in the year 2000, principals were given the right to suspend or even expel students. but a complaint to the ontario human rights commission that the rules were discriminating against minorities forced the board to change the tone and agree to try and find alternatives like detentions before resorting to suspensions. experts are becoming increasingly alarmed by the violence permeating too many schools. they believe action needs to be taken now before things spiral even further out of control. students remain on edge after an incident that saw two of their own stabbed by young intruders 24 hours earlier. those who attend classes at the school simply can’t believe so much blood was spilled on their campus.
“to stop that kind of carnage going on, we need early intervention, we need early prevention. and the earlier the better," suggests stu auty of the canadian safe school network.
"you know, kids that are out there stabbing other kids when there's a conflict are kids that don't have a sound value system. they don't appear to know the difference between right and wrong.” 03/31/2006www.pulse24.com/News/Top_Story/20060331-008/page.aspa 17-year-old suspect turned himself in to police following a brutal double stabbing at victoria park collegiate institute. police are still on the hunt for a second suspect, believed to be between 16-18 years old, who remains at large. he’s described as a middle eastern male with a medium build. neither of the suspects is believed to be a student at the school. campus violence has raised concerns across the g.t.a. this past month. and the last two weeks alone have been especially disturbing. 03/31/2006www.pulse24.com/News/Top_Story/20060330-010/page.asp
