a new malicious computer worm, the blackmal, which began infecting computers last week, was programmed to launch another attack on feb 3, 2006 and the third of every month thereafter, according to security firm trend micro.
the new worm, known variously as nyxem, kamasutra, mywife, and cme-24, had infected hundreds of thousands of machines over the past week, said jamz yaneza, senior threat analyst at trend micro. users may not know yet that their computers had been compromised, he said. like most worms, blackmal propagates via email attachments and shared network storage, including popular peer-to-peer file sharing services. to entice users to open the attachment, the worm employs common techniques, including the promise of pictures, pornographic content or a joke. though this worm utilises common propagation techniques, the code itself was anything but common, said yaneza. this is a destructive virus that deletes and overwrites any number of files present on a user’s system, by targeting the most popular file formats, he said. in addition to losing a great deal of data, this virus also renders the keyboard and mouse inoperable.
yaneza, who described the worm as a global threat, said it had affected computer systems in more than 150 countries. users were advised to update their anti-virus applications and perform a complete scan of their systems to ensure their computers had not been infected. 2/2/2006

bush says u.s. would defend israel against iran u.s. president george w. bush vowed on wednesday the united states will rise to israel's defense if needed against iran and denounced iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad for "menacing talk" against israel. "i am concerned about a person that, one, tries to rewrite the history of the holocaust, and two, has made it clear that his intentions are to destroy israel," bush said. ahmadinejad has prompted international condemnation for anti-israel rhetoric in recent weeks, including saying it should be wiped off the map, and also calling into question the holocaust.
iran is engaged in a stand-off over its nuclear program. tehran insists its program is aimed at developing nuclear power and the united states and other international powers charge it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. the council's five permanent members, including a reluctant russia and china, this week agreed to ask the u.n. nuclear watchdog to report iran to new york immediately.
bush also said he had spoken to russian president vladimir putin about iran and would not say how putin feels about a security council referral. "he understands the threat, and we share the same goal," he said.
the iaea's governing board will decide at an emergency meeting in vienna on thursday whether to report iran to the security council 2/2/2006

drug dealers pay new 'crack tax' a u.s. state's tax on drug dealers has brought in nearly $2 million in its first year. tennessee's so-called 'crack tax' came into effect last january 2005, reports the sun-sentinel. under the scheme, drug dealers are expected to pay taxes on illegal drugs and alcohol. they pay confidentially, and when they do, they get a stamp. if they're caught without the stamp, they'll be prosecuted for tax evasion, as well as drug dealing. 02/24/2006www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1698302.html?menu=news.quirkies.strangecrime

australian jailed for life for bali drugs indonesian judges have indicated the bali nine can expect no mercy, jailing a stunned renae lawrence for life along with fellow heroin courier scott rush.
at first stunned, then in tears, lawrence was bewildered yesterday when the judges rejected the prosecutors' call for a 20-year penalty for her, on the grounds she co-operated with investigators and informed on the ringleaders. someone should have kept their mouth shut said lawrence, a bitter reference to herself, after she was returned to the holding cell at the rear of denpasar district court.
the 28-year-old from newcastle sat in the cell with her head in her hands, crying. soon after, as she spoke to her father, bob, through the bars, she told him: "the sentence should have gone down, not up. i gave them all the information." 02/14/2006www.smh.com.au/news/world/my-life-destroyed-for-nothing/2006/02/13/1139679534806.htmlcan't trust anyone always remember if the cops come no one seen nothing police cars round in circles the silence gathering you never know what's next down here close you eyes and shut you mouth too young to die and too old to believe in promises na na na na--we all walk alone
