men in green sport coats sang "when irish eyes are smiling" and swung and tapped their shillelaghs, the irish walking canes, in unison. one group after another of girls bounded to irish reels, their tightly coiled curls bouncing with each step. there were school marching bands and the shriners and a long line of firetrucks, the drivers delighting in blaring their horns at one another.
they were all part of the 24th annual st. patrick's day parade yesterday in banker's hill, presented by the irish congress of southern california. people lined the route beginning at sixth avenue and juniper street, across to fifth avenue, up to upas street, back to sixth and then down to laurel street.www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20040314-9999-news_1m14patty.html
