u.s. news and world report reports: three nuclear weapons from azerbaijan, the muslim state of the soviet union, had "disappeared"? russian nuclear specialists had shown up in teheran, and those three missing nuclear weapons had actually been sold by the cash starved soviets to iran!
u.s. news and world report, covering a meeting of nato leaders, reported that three more nuclear weapons had disappeared from soviet arsenals and they knew that they had also been sold to third world countries!

a court motion filed six years ago alleged that sheriff's deputies turned up a link between the cia and drug dealers in los angeles. however, evidence of that link mysteriously disappeared from the los angeles county sheriff's department. although the motion was publicly reported at the time, a judge placed a gag order on the case and ordered lawyers not to discuss the alleged cia connection. the cia funneled profits from domestic sales of crack cocaine to a group of nicaraguan contra rebels. officers discovered that drug money was being used to purchase military equipment for central america. the deputies booked property they had seized as evidence, but federal agents later removed it. mysteriously, all records of the search, seizure and property also "disappeared" from the sheriff's department.

"the effect of the drug on the brain is comparable to that of a power cut on a computer." it leaves the victim "totally suggestible" but fully awake and calm. burundanga is administered orally, in powder form, and is soluble, odorless, and tasteless. this makes it perfect for criminal use. the only protection is to watch what you eat or drink.

a 7 year-old boy emerged from a coma saturday after he lost both legs when his father pushed him under a moving train to please his second wife, police said. omar mohei eddin survived when a passersby rushed him to a hospital late friday. his father, ibrahim mohei eddin, 40, had abandoned him thinking he was dead, police said. police quoted the elder mohei eddin, who divorced omar's mother and remarried, as saying his 23-year-old second wife could not live with the son.

a chicago couple has been charged with killing their 16-month-old daughter, then putting her remains in a pot of battery acid and hiding her body parts that did not disintegrate. the crime is so heinous even police are calling it one of the most "horrific" they've ever come across. a northwestern university psychology professor said, "If you reassign a child early enough and tell them that they are whatever sex, then they probably believe you and tend to accept themselves."

clinton administration plans to create health database
a health care proposal from the clinton administration that would track individuals' medical histories has drawn skeptics concerned about the loss of privacy. the national database proposed by the administration was to be debated in a series of hearings. to create the database, each american would be assigned a computer code called a "unique health identifier" that would be used to track individual medical histories, the new york times reported.

deadly heat continues as texas hits record
there's no relief from the heat in texas, even at night.
the temperature barely cooled to an overnight low of 82 degrees in dallas, giving the city a record run of 24 consecutive days when it hasn't dropped below 80. during the day, the mercury has topped the 100 mark for three weeks straight. nationwide, the heat had been blamed for 141 deaths, including at least 93 in texas. there have been at least 15 heat-related deaths in neighboring oklahoma.

the gang, its victims, and the prosecutor who’s trying to stop it.
part of the reason for the gang’s success is that its members are simply incredibly cunning. the gang selects only the most violent and capable individuals to become “made” members—individuals who are, as one former gang member put it, “master manipulators.” but i also think that the leaders have been able to operate for decades because so many of their crimes are done in the cloistered world of prison, where the public doesn’t see them, and where many of their victims are hardened cons.
